Wiley Named a Two-Time NLADA Beacon of Justice Award Honoree
For the second consecutive year, Wiley has been recognized with the Beacon of Justice Award by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA). The award highlights Wiley’s pro bono work on matters related to justice for communities and families.
“This award reflects Wiley’s longstanding commitment to pro bono service,” said Pro Bono Partner Theodore A. Howard. “Over the past year, Wiley has undertaken a diverse array of matters aimed at promoting justice for communities and families, including arguing before the Supreme Court. We are proud to work alongside NLADA to advance equal justice for all and deliver excellent legal services to those who cannot afford counsel.”
Wiley was recognized for multiple matters, including:
- Securing a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court victory in a precedent-setting double jeopardy case;
- Successfully challenging unconstitutional censorship in North Carolina state prisons;
- Defending the constitutional rights of incarcerated individuals in a Virginia correctional facility to appropriate medical care;
- Helping persuade the Supreme Court to hear an important case regarding benefits for military reservists and their families; and
- Obtaining a civil protection order for a survivor of domestic abuse.
The award will be presented at NLADA’s Exemplar Gala on September 24.
NLADA is America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel in civil and criminal defense matters.
